Meet Adam a Taoglas Intern

Why did you choose to work at Taoglas?

Since childhood, I’ve been fascinated by creating, building things, and understanding how they work. I’ve always had a strong passion for anything mechanical, especially cars. In my teens, this interest eventually led me to building personal computers, sparking my curiosity in hardware and software. This passion drove me to pursue a computer science degree at Dublin City University (DCU), where I first encountered Taoglas at the university’s innovation campus, DCU Alpha. With 1 of their 8 global facilities located there, Taoglas intrigued me with its leading role in advanced radio frequency technology. With their headquarters located in my home county of Wexford, I reached out to an employee to inquire about internship opportunities. Today, I’m proud to be part of the Taoglas team.

How has Taoglas supported you in your internship?

During my internship at Taoglas, I’ve been fortunate to receive invaluable support in various ways. The team in Wexford welcomed me warmly, making the onboarding process very enjoyable. They’ve provided opportunities for me to apply the skills I’ve acquired from my courses to real-world projects spanning a wide range of topics. Whenever I encounter questions (and there are many), the team is always eager to assist. Louise, my manager, has also been an outstanding mentor and has played a significant role in contributing to my learning experience. At Taoglas, I’ve discovered a wealth of knowledge that comes from interacting with diverse individuals across different fields. There’s a vast array of expertise and experiences within the team, and I’m continuously learning from everyone I engage with.

What motivates you at work?

Taoglas is known across the globe for their commitment to delivering quality products and services. Knowing that my daily contributions help to maintain this standard fuels my motivation. Also, continuous learning is crucial in my field of study, so putting in the work early on helps prepare me for the future. Another big motivating factor is the abundance of different possibilities available in my field. It inspires me to invest in my current efforts, as I recognize that impactful work today will help me achieve my future career goals.

What advice do you have for people just starting out in their career in your field?

To those in the early stages of their computing and IT careers, I would like to share my advice. Informationand knowledge are key, but it’s the wise application of that that truly matters. . In our field, a commitment to lifelong learning is essential. Keep learning new things, stay curious, gain knowledge, and let your passion drive you to create and innovate.

Also, remember that what you learn in college is just the starting point. You’ll learn the most by putting theory into practice in real-world situations. Take the initiative to seek out internships or work placements in your field to get hands-on experience. This will help you figure out what you’re good at, what you like, and where you want your career to go.

In short, be proactive, productive, and show initiative. By doing so, you’ll not only deepen your understanding but also gain invaluable hands-on experience that will shape your professional journey. As Alan Turing, often regarded as the father of modern computer science, famously said: “We can only see a short distance ahead, but we can see plenty there that needs to be done.”
